How a Plug & Plan spreadsheet works
Shaded cells are yours to type. Totals, charts, and checks fill in. Here’s how Plug & Plan Sheets templates work — no macros, no add-ons.
Building a budget or tracker spreadsheet from scratch takes time, and one broken formula can throw off every total. Plug & Plan Sheets templates come with the formulas, dashboard, and charts already built. You type into the shaded cells; everything else fills in.
Shaded cells are yours
Every template uses the same rule: only the shaded input cells are meant for typing. Those cells hold your numbers — income, budgets, expenses, debts, goals, deposits.
The rest of the sheet is formulas. In Excel those formula cells are locked so you don’t overwrite them by accident. In Google Sheets the formulas sit in place the same way; stick to the shaded cells and the dashboard stays intact.
What fills in for you
As you type, the template updates:
- Totals — income, spent, remaining, saved, progress
- Charts — budget vs. actual, spending mix, saved vs. target, and similar views depending on the file
- Status / checks — short messages that flag things like a missing date, a category that doesn’t match your list, or a deposit with no goal
You don’t write formulas. You enter your numbers and read the dashboard.

Each file works in Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel. Apple Numbers is not supported.
How you get a Google Sheets copy
After you buy, the download is the Excel (.xlsx) file and a how-to PDF. The PDF has your make a copy link. Open that link while signed in to Google and Google saves your own editable copy in Drive. The master file stays view-only on our side so your copy stays yours.
